No Saint Here!

Sometimes when I read a word that I don’t know, my brain connects an automatic association to it.  Such was my experience when I recently read the word hagiography.

Now the ‘graphy’ part of the word I know and understand.  It comes from the Greek word ‘graphis’ which means’ record.’  So a biography is a record of someones life.

To apply the same principle to hagiography, the word should mean a record of a hag, now shouldn’t it?  Oh, Nellie!  My thinking couldn’t be further from the truth!

Hagiography [hag-ee-og-ruh-fee] is a noun that means the biography of a saint!

Oh dear!  I think they should change it to be saintography instead.  Then, people like me wouldn’t be mislead in their thinking . . .
